Marine Battery Runtime Calculator (NEW FEATURE)
You need a battery for your trolling or electric primary outboard motor… but which one do you buy and how long will it last? I often wondered that myself and being a bit of a nerd (and a battery seller) I decided to write an app to find out.
So here it is, the Marine Battery Runtime Calculator (I suppose it could also be referred to as a Trolling Motor Runtime Calculator).
HOW IT WORKS
Trolling motors are rated primarily by thrust, which is measured in pounds (lbs). Here’s how trolling motors are commonly rated and what those ratings mean:
1. Thrust (lbs)
- Thrust is the key performance rating and refers to the motor’s pulling power.
- Common thrust ratings range from 30 lbs (for small boats/kayaks) to 112 lbs (for large boats).
- More thrust is required for heavier boats or when operating in strong currents or wind.
2. Voltage
- Trolling motors run on 12V, 24V, or 36V systems.
- 12V: Up to ~55 lbs thrust
- 24V: Up to ~80 lbs thrust
- 36V: Up to 112 lbs thrust or more
- Higher voltage motors provide more thrust and better efficiency but require more batteries.
3. Shaft Length
- Measured in inches (e.g., 30″, 45″, 60″).
- Must be matched to boat size and transom or bow height to ensure proper motor depth in the water.
4. Control Type
- Hand control (transom mount)
- Foot control (common on bow mounts)
- Remote/i-Pilot (wireless with GPS/autopilot functions)
5. Mount Type
- Transom mount: Attaches to the back of the boat
- Bow mount: Attaches to the front, often more precise for fishing
- Engine mount: Mounts to the outboard motor
